The Diaries, 1990-Present

W

e are extremely pleased to welcome you to this new-look front-end to the diaries pages (Philyra Plan).

As you can see, the illuminated lettering and trinkets promised in the original introduction are here; we have been extraordinarily busy digitising, scanning, and painstakingly touching-up graphics from the many pages of the paper diaries. The intention is still to make diaries publicly available 15 years after they were written, at least those from the early 1990s and 21st Century, but the enormous essays of the late 90s may have to be abridged . . . but we are to decide that in the year 2012 or thereabouts when they are due for release.
We look forward to seeing you again in the coming years to view more treasures from the past.

Introduction to the First Edition (1 Jan 2005)

2005 is the 15th anniversary so, by way of commemoration, the Philyra (Greek
goddess of writing, beauty and healing) Plan is to make successive Diaries available online - census-style, except the gap between recording and publication will be 15 years and not 100! Thus, the electronic version of the 1990 Diary is presented now [in the year 2005], 1991 will be uploaded in 2006 and so on. Subtitles are based on journal material which reflects the character of the corresponding year.

If you see yourself in here, please don't take offence as none is intended; these pages are here for posterity and inspiration. Details by which you could be traced (e.g. postal addresses) have been edited out. Most people were referred to in the original diaries by their Christian name only - if indeed they were a Christian - a shortened name or their initials, anyway. But if you are really desperate, please email me - we can always arrange a pseudonym or 'pen name' to be susbstituted. The text is original but occasionally it will be necessary to edit - particularly quotes - because this is a family-oriented website and bad language is not allowed. (Who said children are worse today than 15 years ago?!)

Whilst these pages can never be the same as the paper diaries, with their graffiti and scribblings, it is hoped that they will eventually feature digitised trinkets like stickers, souvenirs, illustrations and, in the case of the later diaries, music scores and maybe even the illuminated lettering.
